The Nature of Crimes: A crime is something that a person does or fails to do that violates the law. The government establishes penalties for such behavior. Crime rates are influenced by many factors, although many people disagree about the causes of crime and the best solutions to the problem. Crime is costly. In addition to the loss of life and property, it costs the government a great amount of money to prevent, investigate, and prosecute crime.
Student Objectives:
At the conclusion of this Unit, students will be able to:
  • 1. Discuss how the law and values applies to their lives from birth to death.
  • 2. .Identify the legal aspects of Criminal Law and Juvenile Justice
  • 3. Identify and debate crime on Campus or at a school setting.
  • 4. Identify and debate Gangs and Crimes
  • 5.Discuss Substance Abuse and Crimes.
  • 6. Identify Victims of Crimes.
  • Discuss how to prevent and also how to report crimes.
  1. Describe the goals, offenses, penalties, long-term consequences, and privacy concerns of Minnesota's juvenile justice system.
  2. Describe how laws are created; explain the differences between civil and criminal law.
